UMass Journalism on 20/20

Hiya Ethics!

I’m guessing that many of you watched “Campus Confidential” on ABC’s 20/20 Friday night. The story focused on the danger of universities using students as confidential informants (CIs) and highlighted the work of Journalism major Eric Bosco and our Investigative Reporting class. Eric and recent grad Kayla Marchetti’s reporting on the UMass CI policy appeared on the front page of the Boston Globe and led to the University’s examining and then dropping the CI program.

Here’s a link to the show if you didn’t see it.

As I watched the episode, I couldn’t help but notice what I thought were journalistic/ethical shortcomings. For Tuesday, please bring in a list of three questions you could pose in regard to the ethics of this program and tie each question to a principle from the SPJ Code of Ethics. I’m looking for just a few lines, typed.

Let me know if you have questions. And see you Tuesday!
