Brian Williams

Good Morning Ethics,

The story about Brian Williams falsely saying over the years that he was in a helicopter shot down in Iraq was buried in the Times’ Business Section yesterday. Today it’s on the front page, with a full page of coverage inside.

“If it turns out that Mr. Williams intentionally misled the public, it will be an instance not of careless or irresponsible reporting, but of a journalist lying for the purpose of self-aggrandizement.”

This reminds me of the Adam Gropnik quote on your syllabus: “The morality of being a reporter is really about the same as the morality of being a person.”

Have a great weekend!
