Another Fabricator Fired

Hey Ethics,

The Intercept has fired reporter Juan Thompson  for fabricating stories.  One of them was an interview with Charleston shooter Dylann Roof’s cousin, Scott, who, apparently, doesn’t exist.

An editor’s note  “explains how Thompson took editors down a trail of deceit that bears some resemblance to the career-ending fabrication spree of Stephen Glass, who also prevaricated to cover his tracks. Reed says Thompson made up a bogus email account to impersonate a source and lied about his reporting methods. Although he did not cooperate in an editorial review of his stories, Thompson ‘stood by his published work.’”

James and I both saw this right after class today and wondered if we should add Thompson to our growing list of journalism anti-heroes.  He seems to have all the qualifications.

See you Thursday!
