Hoytzclaw Story Editor Threatens Libel Suit

Hiya Ethics,

The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple has a column today about SB Nation’s longform editor threatening to sue Deadspin for libel over its criticism of the Eric Holtzclaw story. Here’s a quick summary of reaction to the original SB Nation piece:

How bad was it? SB Nation editorial director Spencer Hall called it a “complete failure” in an editor’s note. The company is conducting an investigation into the story’s evolution, and SB Nation’s longform unit is taking a break. Glenn Stout, the longform editor who’d shepherded the 12,000-word piece into publication, was fired. “[W]rongheaded, noxious and ill-conceived,” judged New York University Professor Jay Rosen of the end product.

Now Stout says Deadspin has seriously damaged his professional reputation, and he’s seeking a correction and/or retraction to restore it. If Deadspin doesn’t comply, he’s threatening to sue for libel.

I wanted to keep you posted as this story develops. Here’s a link to the detailed Wemple column if you want to check it out.

Have a great break!
